Reuben Can Run Toward Childhood Again
At Ekwendeni Mission Hospital, specialized surgical care through a surgical camp gave a five-year-old boy the chance to regain his mobility, return to school, and enjoy the freedom of childhood.

Before his injury, five-year-old Reuben Mwandira spent his days doing what children do. He ran, played with friends, attended nursery school, and moved freely through life in his village in northern Malawi.
Then, while playing, Reuben fractured the upper part of his tibia. His family rushed him to a hospital, where an X-ray confirmed that he needed specialized orthopedic care and surgery.
But the care he needed was not immediately available. A shortage of orthopedic doctors left Reuben waiting for nearly three weeks while his family watched, worried, and prayed. Without timely surgery, the fracture could heal improperly, and a childhood injury could become a lifelong limitation.
Then an opportunity opened.
An orthopedic team conducting a surgical camp at Ekwendeni Mission Hospital identified Reuben and assessed his condition. He was transferred to Ekwendeni, where the team prepared him for surgery. The following day, Reuben received the operation his family had been waiting for.
“We were losing hope, but when the doctors told us that my child could be operated on, I felt that God had answered our prayers.”
— Reuben’s mother
Reuben’s recovery would take time, but the operation changed the direction of his story. His family could once again hope that he would regain his mobility, return to school, play with his friends, and move freely through childhood.
His story also reveals why readiness matters. Compassion alone could not repair Reuben’s leg. He needed trained professionals with specialized skills, a functioning hospital equipped for surgery, and partnerships that could bring the right resources together at the right time.
At Ekwendeni, those pieces came together.
Reuben’s story reflects why MBF partners with Christian healthcare ministries such as Ekwendeni Mission Hospital. By strengthening hospitals, equipping healthcare professionals, and supporting systems that make excellent care possible, MBF helps local healthcare workers be ready when patients like Reuben need them.
