Owned by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), the Kikuyu Hospital School of Nursing is affiliated with one of the oldest hospitals in Kenya. Located just about 12 miles from central Nairobi, the town of Kikuyu grew from a mission settlement. The school is part of the Presbyterian University of East Africa (PUEA), which offers Bachelor’s Degrees across many educational disciplines and is accredited by the Nursing Council of Kenya. Offering both a Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing and a BSN 4-year degree, the school has recently begun enrollment with 25 students coming onboard in 2021. Two Mary K Scholars are currently enrolled at the school. We celebrate the launch of the programs at Kikuyu Hospital School of Nursing especially because nurses form the backbone of medical care in Kenya, providing nursing and midwife care in hospitals and community and rural health clinics. Yet, there are only 1.2 nurses and midwives per 1,000 people in Kenya, compared to 14.5 in the USA. Growing the pool of skilled nurses in countries like Kenya is one of MBF’s core focus areas.
