Nkhoma Mission Hospital (NMH) is the largest of the five hospitals in the emerging Countrywide Medical Network in Malawi. Centrally located near the capital of Lilongwe, Nkhoma Mission Hospital is a teaching institution with training programs in Family Medicine Specialization, Clinical Officer Internship, Global Health, and practical training for local and international medical students and nurses including students at the Nkhoma College of Nursing and Midwifery.

Owned by the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), the hospital gets referrals from nine health center clinics in the catchment area and oversees 11 additional CCAP health centers outside the catchment area.

NMH provides pediatric, maternity, dental, ophthalmic, diagnostic, surgical and general medical services. The hospital is quite busy with over 50,000 patient visits per year including about 720 tiny patients who are treated in the neonatal ward.

Malawi faces a critical shortage of surgeons, and it is exciting that Nkhoma Mission Hospital began a new surgical residency program in January, 2022.

This program will be one of the first to train surgeons locally. Hear more about the doctors who are helping make the program possible.

Patients wait to be seen at Nkhoma Hospital where over 50,000 patient visits occurred last year.

The surgical ward at Nkhoma will be expanded and updated in the coming months.

Meet Alinafe who traveled together with her older sister from her home village to Nkhoma Hospital. They travelled by motorbike for quite a distance. Did you know that the median travel time to a medical facility in Malawi is 1 ½ hours?

The day after she arrived at Nkhoma Mission Hospital, Alinafe delivered a healthy baby boy. She has two other children at home. Her husband is a local farmer who grows maize and soybeans like many small holders in Malawi. Did you know that 83% of Malawi’s population is rural with many families eking out a living from small parcels of land?

Much of the crops grown by Alinafe’s family are consumed by their household, leaving little to sell or trade for things like medical services. Your gifts have made it possible for Alinafe to deliver her little boy in a safe environment where quality medical care was ready for her and her son.

Medical care for women and children is a priority for MBF and our partner donors.

Families and patients seek out Nkhoma as their hospital of choice for the quality of care provided.
