Frank M. Coffin Family Law Fellowship
On May 1, 1998, the Maine Bar Foundation
announced the Coffin Fellows Project. The Coffin Fellows are
selected to serve two-year terms during which time they represent
low-income parties in family law cases. Through the generous
funding of attorneys and law firms throughout Cumberland County
the Maine Bar Foundation is able to offer this experience to young
lawyers wanting to work for legal services.
The Coffin Fellows project is named after Frank
M. Coffin, Senior Circuit Judge on the First Circuit Court of
Appeals. It is a fitting tribute to his years of public service
and specifically, his commitment to legal services for the poor.
The Coffin Fellows currently have their offices at the Portland
office of Pine Tree Legal Assistance. They work exclusively with
clients who have qualified through the Volunteer Lawyers Project
for pro bono family law representation. The Coffin Fellows help to
reduce the number of families who are unable to obtain needed
legal services. The Fellows are each expected to handle over 50
clients per year.
The 2011 Coffin Fellowship application
deadline October 15, 2010. Interested candidates should submit
a letter of interest, resume, references and a brief writing
sample. The expected start date for the Coffin Fellowship is
early September 2011.
